Around 2018 automakers finished the switch from halogen to high-intensity LED. A halogen bulb spread its output fairly evenly across the spectrum. An LED concentrates a large share of it into one narrow blue-white band, at 445 to 455 nanometers, that halogen never produced.
Short-wavelength blue-white is also the part of the spectrum that scatters most on its way through the eye. Instead of holding its line, it spreads, which is why an oncoming LED arrives as a wash sitting over the road rather than staying at the car.
